Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher confirmed to the Chronicle that a man found dead Aug.22 at the Palmetto State Armory shooting range died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Fisher confirmed preliminary reports from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department that a 36-year-old Columbia man died from an apparent suicide.

She said current policy does not permit her to identify the victim.

According to a redacted incident report provided to the Chronicle by a sheriff’s department spokesperson, deputies responded to a call from the armory’s management officials, who found the victim around 11 a.m. Aug. 22. EMS was called and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

The spokesperson said the sheriff’s department would not identify the victim, in accordance with the department’s policy on suicide deaths.

When asked about the incident last week, an official with the Palmetto State Armory said he could not comment at the present time.

The armory, located at 3760 Fernandina Rd,, temporarily closed facilities soon after the shooting.

According to the company’s website, Palmetto State Armory has six retail locations in South Carolina and one each in Georgia and North Carolina, most of which have shooting ranges attached. The company manufactures a variety of guns and puts an emphasis on AR-15s.
