Lexington County school district to use metal detectors at sporting events

Posted

A Lexington County school district will now use metal detectors at all arena and stadium events.

Beginning Nov. 28, Lexington District 2 announced it would “implement regular use of metal detectors to screen spectators” at these events.

“All event attendees will be asked to follow instructions of the security screening staff on site, and only clear bags will be allowed in stadiums and arenas,” the district’s news release states.

“Spectators will be asked to individually walk through the metal detector, which will beep if a metal object is detected.  Anyone with a prohibited item will be asked to take the item back to a vehicle before being permitted into the stadium or arena. Spectators will not be asked to remove any belts, clothing, hats, or shoes.”

The district posted a list of “frequently asked questions” about the metal detector policy.

“These items are part of the district’s continuing commitment to provide a safe and secure environment for students, employees, and community members,” the website says as to why they’re using metal detectors and sticking to a clear bag policy, which went into effect in August.

The site says that there haven’t been threats made against district athletic events, “but like many surrounding stadiums and arenas, Lexington 2 has implemented use of walk-through metal detectors, along with other measures, as a means of further strengthening safety and security measures already in place.”

The district notes that gates will open an hour prior to events to help with getting people through the metal detectors and into the venue. There will be detectors at all entrances.

“Everyone plays a role in safety, and we appreciate your continued support as we further strengthen security measures already in place throughout the district,” the release states.
