Lexington County teams prepare for girls soccer playoffs

Posted

Girls soccer teams across Lexington County are playing their final regular season games this week as they gear up for the postseason.

The most dramatic matchup, however, happened after press time on Tuesday as River Bluff hosted Chapin to determine the Region IV-5A champion. Here’s a look at where Lexington County stands heading into those final matchups.

5A

Chapin

Last year’s 5A girls semifinalist came into Tuesday needing a win over River Bluff after falling in the first matchup 1-0. It was one of only two losses so far this season for Chapin, who enters the road contest with an overall record of 13-2.

The Lady Eagles are led this season by a spectacular defense. They’ve allowed just five goals all season, as all but one of their 13 wins have been shutouts. Junior Olivia Bradley and sophomore Addison Bagnal have shared time, recording 19 and 15 saves, respectively.

Junior Darcy Ahern has been the top offensive weapon with 10 goals to go with a team-high 12 assists. Freshman Lila Bowers has another 11 goals and six assists on the season.

The 1-0 loss to River Bluff on March 24 houses their lone goal allowed in region play, as Chapin shut out Lexington 2-0 and 1-0, Dutch Fork 2-0 and 1-0, White Knoll 1-0 and 4-0.

River Bluff

River Bluff matches Chapin with a 6-1 region record, while they are 11-4-1 overall. Their lone loss in region play came in overtime on the road against Lexington, falling 2-1.

Like Chapin, the Lady Gators are powered by excellent defense. They have seven shutouts on the season from senior Erika Violette in goal.

Offensively, they’re led by another senior in Alanna Colbert, who has 13 goals and four assists. Maliha Brown and Brooke Ogorek are tied for the team-lead with five assists, while Charlotte Wiman has scored another four goals with three assists.

Lexington

The Lady Wildcats are firmly in third place in the region with a 4-3 record against their county foes in the region and a 16-5-1 mark overall. Their non-region losses both came against the same tough Clover squad, while they tied last year’s state champion Wando 0-0 to open the season in tournament play.

Lexington has split goaltending duties between senior Sarah Waller and junior Gracie Moulton. The two have combined for five shutouts on the season as Waller has racked up 22 saves and Moulton has 13. They’ve allowed 1.6 goals per game on the season.

The Lady Wildcats have a balanced offense as five players have at least five goals. Adriana Dunat leads the way with 10 goals and three assists. Sidney Kitts has eight goals and four assists while Maggie Heffernan and Alyssa Frazier each have seven goals. Frazier also leads the team with 11 assists.

Dutch Fork and White Knoll

Dutch Fork and White Knoll have both struggled in region play. Dutch Fork has a solid 9-6 record overall, but all six of those losses came in region play. They too had a region game Tuesday, traveling to Lexington. They would need to pull off the upset to overtake White Knoll for the final playoff spot, as the Timberwolves own the tiebreaker. The pair split regular season matchups with White Knoll winning 3-0 and the Silver Foxes taking a 2-1 win to open region play.

Dutch Fork opened the season with seven straight wins, but struggled once region play began, winning just two games since the win over WK. Shannon Wright leads the offense with eight goals, while Gracie Morris has racked up 85 saves in a busy season in goal.

White Knoll, meanwhile, has won all its games in bunches with two 3-game winning streaks. They opened the season 3-1-1 before seven consecutive winless games. Their last game was a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Bishop England in overtime. They close out the season with Ashley Ridge and Hammond on Thursday and Friday.

4A

Airport

Airport is the top local 4A squad, sitting in third in Region IV. The team has a region mark of 3-3 but are 11-5-1 overall. It may still have a chance to catch Aiken in second, as it has matchups with North Augusta and Midland Valley this week, the two bottom teams in the region, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Airport split with Aiken during the regular season, falling 4-3 on March 30 after a shootout victory earlier in the month.

The Eagles have been powered by Victoria Coleman and Ella Harman this season. Coleman, a freshman, has 21 goals and 15 assists on the season, while Harman has another 17 goals and 11 assists. Vanessa Coleman has another 11 assists and four goals.

Caitlyn Miller has 80 saves in goal this season with an 80% save percentage.

Irmo

Irmo sits at 6-7 overall and 5-4 in Region V, holding onto the fourth and final playoff spot. The team faced Lugoff-Elgin on Tuesday to see who would finish third in the region, as it entered the matchup with equal region records. L-E won the first matchup 3-1.

Goals have been hard to come by this season for Irmo as they have just 19 on the season, seven of which came in a win over Pelion in their first win on the year. Ella Kreiner leads the team with five, while Adisyn Creech and Evelyn Garcia each have four.

3A

Brookland-Cayce

Brookland-Cayce and Swansea hold the last two playoff spots in their region.

The Bearcasts finished region play with a record of 5-5 and an overall record of 9-11. They split regular season games with county region rival Swansea with a 2-0 win and a shootout loss.

Goals have come in bunches this season, as B-C has scored at least six goals five times. Kimberly Neely has been electric with 30 goals and 14 assists during her senior season. Layne Powers has another 15 goals and 12 assists. Natalie Nunez also has 11 assists and four goals.

Laura Rubio and Leslie Alarcon have shared time in goal. Rubio has 78 saves on the season and one shutout.

Swansea

Swansea matches Brookland-Cayce’s 5-5 record in the region after Orangeburg-Wilkinson was forced to forfeit their matchup last week. It has an overall record of 7-6 including the forfeit. After splitting regular season games, Swansea sits in fourth with fewer goals scored.

Chapel-anne Farris leads the team with six goals, while Julisa Arroaga-Arreguin has another five goals and two assists.

Freshman Charity Rosier has 41 saves in the season in goal.

2A

Batesburg-Leesville

Batesburg-Leesville sits in fourth in Region III, holding off county rival Pelion for the final playoff spot. They have a record of 2-5 in region play and 5-11 overall.

B-L split with Pelion during the regular season, also earning a region victory over Silver Bluff. They will close region play against Strom Thurmond on Thursday.
