The high school volleyball regular season is over, and Lexington County’s teams are set to begin their postseason journeys this week.
Eight local teams will take the floor this week in the first round. A few other teams earned byes and won’t get started until next week.
Coming into the postseason, four Lexington County teams are riding high, fresh off winning their region championships. Those teams are River Bluff, Gray Collegiate, Gilbert and Batesburg-Leesville.
Together, those four teams combined for just one conference loss.
They will all be on a bye this week and play the winners of first-round games.
River Bluff won its second straight region crown by defeating Lexington in the regular-season finale. The Gators and Wildcats were the top two teams in the region all year and could meet again in the second round if Lexington wins its first game.
Gray Collegiate finished the regular season 25-5 and won the region title in its first season of 5A play. The War Eagles are serious state title contenders and are the No. 6 ranked team in South Carolina, according to MaxPreps.
Gilbert was also perfect in region games, going 10-0 to earn first place and a bye in the playoffs. The Indians overcame a rough start to the season, going 4-12 in all out-of-conference games.
The first few rounds of the playoffs will be a test to see how much of a serious contender the team is.
Batesburg-Leesville has been one of the more consistent teams in Lexington County this season. The Panthers finished 21-11 overall and 8-0 in region, despite relying on a group of younger players.
The team dropped just one set throughout all its conference clashes.
This year, it will also be important to pay attention to the boys brackets, as Lexington County teams qualified for the playoffs there.
River Bluff and Lexington are both in the 5A tournament in their inaugural seasons. Airport also qualified for the playoffs, playing in 4A.
