Jarvis Green of Dutch Fork and Jonah Norris of Lexington will not only square off against each other on the gridiron Oct. 28.
The two senior running backs are among the seven finalists for South Carolina's Mr. South Football Award. The list was released Wednesday for the award given to the top public school high school football senior player in the Palmetto State based on performance on and off the field.
The other nominees named were Camden defensive lineman Xzavier McLeod, Clinton linebacker Bryson James, Spartanburg quarterback Raheim Jeter, Camden’s Xzavier McLeod, Barnwell running back Tyler Smith, and South Florence quarterback LaNorris Sellers.
The winner will be announced at halftime of the Touchdown Energy Cooperatives Bowl set for Dec. 10 at Doug Shaw Stadium in Myrtle Beach.
Former Gray Collegiate Academy running back K.Z. Adams was a finalist last year for the award, which was ultimately won by Hilton Head Island linebacker Jaylen Sneed.
"It’s definitely a awesome honor and I’m glad I could honor the Lord with my talents," said Norris, who will play for the South team at the all-star game. "It’s awesome to see what he has done since I got injured last year. It is awesome to be able to represent one of the best schools in the state as well."
After having last season cut short due to a foot injury, Norris leads all Chronicle Country running backs with 1,728 yards and 25 touchdowns. He's also had two, 300-plus yards games as the Wildcats enter the regular-season finale on a eight-game winning streak.
"This [nomination] is a tribute to his hard work and dedication," Lexington head coach Perry Woolbright said.
Norris looks to become the second Wildcat to win "Mr. South Carolina Football". Former wide receiver Shaq Roland won the award in 2011.
Like Norris, Green also seeks to be his school's second Mr. South Carolina Football recipient. A two-time state champion and Shrine Bowl selection, he's rushed for 1,065 yards and 16 touchdowns and is coming off tying a school record with Stephen Davis Jr. with seven touchdowns against River Bluff.
"I believe JG is the best football player in South Carolina," Dutch Fork head coach Tom Knotts said. "He is a talented running back that can run with speed and power as well as being extremely elusive. He is also a great pass catching running. Combine all these traits with great work ethic and leadership and you have a young man that is more than deserving for the MR. FOOTBALL award."
Former Dutch Fork running back Matthew Colburn was a Mr. South Carolina Football winner in 2014.
High school football fans will get to see both Norris and Green in action on the same field. Top-ranked Dutch Fork visits third-ranked Lexington in this weeek's WACH 57 Sonic Friday Night Rivals Game of the Week to determine the Region 4-5A title.
The game will air on Spectrum Channel 1250 and can be streamed at both wach.com and the Lexington Wildcats Facebook page.
