Lexington Girls Take First Place at Class 5A Cross-Country Lower State Qualifiers

Gilbert Girls Placed 5th to Qualify in Class 3A

Chronicle Country cross-country teams had strong showings at the S.C. High School League Classes 5A and 2A qualifiers held Nov. 3 at Newberry College.

The Lexington High School girls finished first at the Class 5A Odd qualifier with a team score of 33. Kendra Miles led the way with a second-place finish with a score of 19:15.94, followed in third place by Brittany Mobley-Meulman (19:19.06).

Ava Kanitkar and Elanorah Patangan were ninth and 10th, respectively, and Jada Metz was 12th to round out the top Lexington finishers. Dutch Fork placed 11th as a team.

In the boys’ Even qualifier, Chapin placed second overall behind J.L. Mann with a score of 67. Abigail White led the Lady Eagles with a fourth place time of 19:31.22 with teammates Bella Bonavilla and Georgia Babcock placing ninth and 12th, respectively.

The River Bluff girls were fifth in the Even qualifier.

In the Class 5A boys, Chapin and Lexington placed second and third, respectively, in the Odd Division. The Wildcats’ Jesse Oates was third overall with a time of 16:09.21 and teammate Luke McKenna was seventh.

The Eagles’ Michael Ziehl and Calvin Smith were 11th and 12th, respectively.  The Even qualifier saw River Bluff place fourth and Dutch Fork ninth.

In Class 2A, both Pelion teams placed fourth in the Even qualifiers. Both the Batesburg-Leesville boys and Gray Collegiate girls finished eighth in the Odd qualifiers.

The state qualifiers for Classes 3A and 4A were held Nov. 5. In Class 3A, the Gilbert girls placed fifth in the Odd Division led by Rachel Davis who was also fifth in the individual standings.

The Gilbert boys were ninth in the Odd qualifier and Brookland-Cayce placed 13th in the Even Division.

In Class 4A, the Irmo girls placed sixth in the Odd qualifiers and boys team finished ninth in the Odd qualifier with James Holliday leading the way in 10th place.

The state championships for Classes 5A and 2A are Nov. 10 at Sandhills Research Center in Columbia and Nov. 11 for Classes 3A and 4A.
