Lexington Sheriff's Department Arrests Man Accused of Robbing Circle K

Posted

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department arrested a man accused of robbing a Circle K convenience store on Bush River Road in Columbia.

According to an arrest warrant provided to the Chronicle, Richard Dean Dougherty Jr., a 60-year-old from Columbia, is charged with armed robbery. The department announced the arrest Aug. 19.

An incident report provided to the Chronicle states that the clerk working during the incident told the sheriff’s department that a little after 3 a.m. July 14, a “white male dressed in a blue flannel shirt, blue jeans, and a black ski mask, entered the store with his hand hidden under his shirt to simulate a weapon. He then demanded all of the money out of the register. After [redacted] handed it over, the subject forced him in the office and told him not to come out until he was gone.”

Security camera footage showed the subject driving off in a white 2000s model Toyota Camry.

“The subject didn’t touch anything while in the store thus there was nothing else to process on scene,” the incident report states.

According to a news release from the department, investigators found clothing and a vehicle consistent with what was seen in the footage while executing a search warrant on Dougherty’s home.

The arrest warrant states that “the defendant threatened to kill the store clerk during the robbery.”

Dougherty is in custody at the Lexington County Detention Center.
