Lexington’s Comfort Scratch Kitchen closes, owners seeking new location

Posted

A recent addition to Lexington offering Southern favorites and other comforting dishes has closed but promises to reopen in another location.

Comfort Scratch Kitchen, which opened at 407 N Lake Drive across from Lexington Elementary School in 2021, has closed, co-owner Laren Brooks posted to the Facebook group Columbia Foodies on April 2.

The owners of the restaurant didn’t immediately respond to the Chronicle’s request for comment.

“We want to inform everyone that Comfort Scratch Kitchen is closing for the time being,” Brooks posted. “This is not something that we wanted to do, but unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control we have to shut the doors. We are currently looking for a new location and will post the moment we have something in the works. Comfort Scratch Kitchen is not done yet!”

The restaurant, which was open for breakfast and lunch, served breakfast items such as biscuit sandwiches and chicken and waffles, along with lunch dishes including chicken pot pie, burgers and sandwiches. The location also emphasized baked goods including cinnamon rolls and mini bundt cakes.

Comfort Scratch, which labels itself as a “family-owned Christian business,” was started by Willie and Laren Brooks, who were, according to the restaurant’s website, both born and raised in Ohio.

“They met in the restaurant industry working together at a restaurant in Columbus, Ohio,” the website details. “A few years later they were married and shortly after migrated to South Carolina in which they fell in love with and now call home. Willie and Laren continued to work in the restaurant industry for many years and had always aspired to open a restaurant of their own. Their concept is a family friendly restaurant that provides a comfortable setting; featuring food made from scratch that they have enjoyed cooking and serving over the years.”

The restaurant’s spot in Lexington was somewhat unusual, located in a house with a large tent behind that felt as much like an event space as a restaurant. The website notes that the space was available for event rentals.
