Loaded Gun Found in Airport High Student's Backpack

Posted

Airport High School reports that a loaded gun was found in a student's backpack Aug. 22.

“Acting on a request from law enforcement regarding a weekend off-campus incident, administrators and the school’s SROs met a student as he arrived by bus before the start of classes to talk with him,” states a release from Lexington County School District 2. “The student was taken immediately to an office, and a subsequent search of the student’s backpack uncovered a loaded gun and ammunition.”

According to the Cayce Police Department, the student was 18-year-old Treyvon Hampton, who was arrested for a “weapons law violation.”

Lexington 2 states that the student will face “district discipline in accordance with board policy and state law.”

Cayce Police say the arrest stemmed from an earlier incident outside the school.

“On August 20, 2022, a shooting and altercation occurred near the Town of Gaston in Lexington County,” a release from the department states. “The County then made the notification to Cayce PD that some of the students involved in the shooting were enrolled at Airport High School. Based on information received from the incident this weekend, school officials searched the bags of each and every student named in the shooting and altercation that took place near Gaston. When a loaded handgun was found, Hampton was immediately arrested and taken to Lexington County Detention Center.”

Both the district and Cayce Police Chief Chris Cowan emphasized zero tolerance when it comes to weapons on campus.

“We do not tolerate weapons in our Cayce schools and I am proud of our officers that worked quickly this morning to keep our students and our teachers safe,” Cowan is quoted. “This was a collaborative effort with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Lexington School District Two. The partnership with both of these entities helped stop the potential for any violent acts in our school.”

“Lexington Two does not tolerate weapons on campus or any potential threat to the safety of our students or employees,” the district release states. “We ask parents and guardians to remind their students to immediately report to an administrator, teacher, SRO, or other district employee any alleged threats, suspicious activities and/or discussions, as well as anything that just doesn’t seem right.”

Lexington 2 directs those with tips to give them via text, call or email at (803) 363-5172 or lex2tipline@lex2.org.

According to the district, “out of an abundance of caution,” law enforcement and extra administrators will be at Airport High throughout the day while the school day proceeds on a normal schedule.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
