Man accused of dumping body in Lexington County now charged with murder

Posted

A Leesville man now faces a murder charge after a body was dumped earlier this month in Lexington County.

Jesse Lou Gregory, 34, faces additional charges of murder, grand larceny, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and circumventing an electronic monitoring device after being arrested Nov. 13, per a release from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

Gregory was previously charged with a single count of desecration of human remains after he was arrested on other charges not related to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department’s investigation into the death of 25-year-old Nicholas Kenneth Hendrix of Summit, whose body was discarded between Red Bank and Springdale.

“These charges are the result of our investigation into a body that was found Nov. 12 at the corner of Old Barnwell Road and White Knoll Way,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon is quoted in a release “Gregory was identified as a person of interest in that crime and arrested Nov. 13 and charged with desecrating human remains after investigators said he discarded the body of a shooting victim.”

According to the release, Gregory told detectives that he shot Hendrix while the two of them were driving in the Leesville area, with Koon stating that Hendrix’s injuries and evidence collected from the car are inconsistent with Gregory’s account of how things unfolded.

The release notes that Gregory is accused of shooting Hendrix with a shotgun.

An incident report about the Nov. 12 discarding of Hendrix's body previously provided to the Chronicle details that a witness who lives on Old Barnwell Road recounted that "she heard a loud 'thud' and then a car door shut. [Redacted] stated that she then looked out her window and saw a man slumped over in her driveway and a white mid 2000's SUV speeding off."

"The defendant treated the remains with a violent disrespect," a previoiusly provided arrest warrant states.

Gregory is accused of stealing the white vehicle the day before he allegedly shot Hendrix, the cause for the grand larceny charge, the release states, noting that he was apprehended in Aiken County with the stolen vehicle.

“Before the sequence of events unfolded, we’ve confirmed Gregory failed to properly charge a GPS electronic ankle monitoring device he was required to wear as a condition of his bond from a previous charge,” Koon is quoted.

Gregory remains in custody at the Lexington County Detention Center, as he has since his arrest, having been denied bond Nov. 14.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
