Man Dead After Fleeing Cayce Police, Falling From Columbia Convention Center Balcony

Posted

A man died after falling from a balcony at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center while fleeing from Cayce Police.

According to a release, at about 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 24, Cayce officers noticed two individuals in a car at Guignard Park, a couple blocks away from the Congaree River and the Blossom Street Bridge to Columbia. The release notes that signs at the park indicate it closes at dark.

A provided incident report details that an officer in a marked patrol car parked and approached the silver Chervrolet Sonic with an N.C. tag.

“The vehicle then attempted to drive away but I told the driver to stop several times,” the officer recounts in the report. “The vehicle then stopped but as I approached the front driver’s side door, the vehicle accelerated away at a high rate of speed initiating a vehicle pursuit.”

“The vehicle was then involved in a single car collision with a curb and concrete planter at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center,” the report continues. “After the vehicle came to a stop, the driver then ran away from the vehicle.”

The release states that officers, who attended to the other individual in the car after the crash, didn’t engage in a foot chase.

While fleeing on foot, the suspect fell from the upper level balcony outside the convention center to the lower level, causing his death, according to the release.

“Our officer responded in accordance with his training by calling for additional officers and first checking on the other individual from the single car accident,” Cayce Police Chief Chris Cowan is quoted in the press release. “There was no foot chase initiated.”

The suspect was wanted on a non-extradition warrant in Georgia, according to the release.

Officers from the Cayce and Columbia police departments helped the passenger seek medical attention, the release states.

More information about the suspect will be released by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
