National franchise brewpub to fill out Lexington spot once slated for Navy Yard beer garden

Posted

A key spot along Lexington’s Main Street, once slated to be the site of an ultimately scrapped beer garden, is now fully rented out, with the latest future tenant also planning to sling craft beer.

Trinity Partners announced that it has reached an agreement with an occupant for the final space, the 8,720-square-foot building immediately at the corner of West Main Street and North Church Street for a location of the brewpub franchise Voodoo Brewing Company.

In operation since 2005, Voodoo started with a single brewpub in Meadville, Pa., and now has 10 locations in the U.S. in addition to distributing its beer to various stores in at least 15 states, including both Carolinas.

The Lexington location is expected to open later this year, per Trinity Partners’ release

The franchise already has two locations in South Carolina, one in the Upstate in Fountain Inn and another near Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet.

While Voodoo has privately held corporate locations, the Lexington location will be a locally owned franchise, confirmed Town of Lexington Economic Developer Jack Stewart.

Voodoo’s outposts feature bar food like Pub Pretzels, Gouda Steak Fries, smoked wings, pizzas, burgers and more, alongside the brand’s signature brews.

The brewpub joins two other tenants at the 102 W Main St. property, with each occupying one of the site’s three buildings. Already announced and in progress are the wine bar Molto Vino, which will open its second location after its first in Forest Acres, and TakoSushi, which will add a second Midlands location in addition to the one it already has on Columbia’s Main Street.

In its release about Voodoo, Trinity Partners reports that TakoSushi is expected to open in the second quarter of 2024.

No announcements about a potential opening timeframe for Molto Vino have been made. When the Chronicle checked in with owner Tony Carbone in September, he said, “I never give timelines on construction.”

“I've done this long enough to know that whatever they tell you … it’s not accurate,” he added, “but it's not a very complicated project. Our business model is basically an open rectangle. We throw in some tables, some couches and some wine machines and then we roll.”

Announced in 2021, the Navy Yard on Main beer garden was initially slated to occupy the entirety of the corner lot that will soon house Voodoo, TakoSushi and Molto Vino. Though the business defeated a legal challenge to its beer and wine license by the neighboring St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, the beer garden was ultimately abandoned in 2022.

The church didn't immediately respond to the Chronicle's request for comment about its new neighbor.

“Though we will always be sad Navy Yard on Main did not come to fruition, we're genuinely thrilled to see this new venture unfold and extend a warm welcome to Voodoo Brewing as they join the Town of Lexington’s Main Street District,” Gavin Smith, Lexington Town Council member and one of the three co-owners behind Navy Yard, said in a statement to the Chronicle, adding that Voodoo continues recent progress along the town’s burgeoning Main Street and further boosts the town’s entrepreneurial spirit.

“We urge our community to support Voodoo Brewing with the same fervor and enthusiasm as they did Navy Yard, and look forward to joining you all for a beer at Voodoo soon.”

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
