Samuel B. George II

June 20, 1933-Jan. 17, 2024

Sammie George passed away on January 17, 2024, at the age of 90. He was born in Lexington, SC and lived in town for most of his life. He was the son of the late Francis Calhoun and Eula Mae Hendrix George.

Sammie graduated from Lexington High School as class valedictorian in 1951. He co-edited the school paper and was also a football cheerleader. He then graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1955. He married Cuemilla Harter on June 9, 1955, and joined the army in August. After 2 years, he began his career as a Registered Professional Engineer with The Shakespeare Co. After 20 years, he was a founding partner of Carolina Dielectrics, Inc.

He served on Lexington Town Council for 21 years, receiving the Order of the Palmetto in recognition of this. He was a lifelong member of Lexington United Methodist Church; he was a faithful blood donor, giving 34 gallons; and he was a life member of IPTAY. Sammie played tennis for many years — until fairly recently — and served as the local coordinator for Super Senior tennis.

In addition to his parents, Sammie was predeceased by his sister, Martha Jane Townsend. He is survived by his son, Rev. Dr. Samuel B. George, III (Mark MacDougal); daughter, Laura (Jeff) Alexander; grandchildren Amanda Grace, Nathaniel James, Nicholas George, Cuemilla Jean, and Samuel Thomas Alexander; and numerous more distant relatives.

A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2024 at Lexington UMC, 309 E. Main Street, Lexington, SC, with visitation immediately to follow.
