Chris and Ryan Koon, the sons of late Chapin Mayor Al Koon, have released a statement regarding the upcoming Nov. 4 town election.
Koon, first elected mayor in 2021, died Oct. 17, surrounded by family at Lexington Medical Center, a few days after the town announced he would enter hospice care.
Prior to serving as mayor, he served on town council for four years.
“As Town Councilman and Mayor, Dad was guided by a singular purpose: to safeguard Chapin’s future while honoring its history," the statement read. "He understood that thoughtful growth is essential to a thriving community, and he worked tirelessly to ensure Chapin could prosper without losing the character and charm that make it so special. Like the good engineer he was, he crafted plans to maintain that harmony between the past and the future."
According to 2021 Chronicle reporting, Koon's campaign for mayor focused on “preparing for the future while staying true to the community’s values and character.”
His term was set to end in November, and he had filed to run again, along with Ron Colley and Bill Mitchell Jr.
Gregg White is currently listed on the town website as Chapin’s mayor pro tem.
In their recent statement, the Koons endorsed Gregg White and Jerry Taylor for town council. They additionally endorsed White for mayor.
“Please consider writing in Gregg White for Mayor. We ask that you write in Gregg’s name in addition to voting for him for Town Council,” the letter read. “If Gregg wins both elections, he will have the option to serve as Mayor, and Chapin voters may then select a new candidate to fill his Council seat.
“Our hope is simple: to keep Chapin on the path Dad envisioned—a town that honors its roots while embracing a bright future. We believe Gregg and Jerry both share our father’s vision for the future and are well-equipped to continue our father’s work. We hope you’ll consider Gregg and Jerry on Election Day.”
Election Day is Nov. 4. Early voting for local 2025 races is from Monday, Oct. 20, to Friday, Oct. 31, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lexington County Voter Registration and Election Office, located at 605 West Main Street, Ste. C, in Lexington.
