Northside Christian running back Sam Burks and Gilbert setter and right side hitter Kaylie Spires were voted Athletes of the Week after a few big performances for their teams.

Other male nominees alongside Burks were Irmo quarterback A.J. Brand and Dutch Fork quarterback Jon Hunt. The other female nominees for the week alongside Spires were River Bluff’s Kylie Wison and Lexington’s Kendall Vinson.

Voting for Athlete of the Week goes from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek.

Sam Burks

Burks put up video game numbers in Northside Christian’s 60-20 win over Palmetto Christian Academy. In one half, Burks carried the ball 14 times for 242 yards and four touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Burks recorded an interception.

The blowout win helped the Crusaders get back to an even 4-4 record on the season as they head into their crucial final regular season game.

Kaylie Spires

In Gilbert’s two biggest matches of the year, a region championship game against Orangeburg-Wilkinson and first round playoff game against Lake City, Spires stepped up in a big way and helped the Indians claim a region title and advance in the state playoffs.

In those two games, Spires recorded a combined five serving aces, 17 assists, seven kills and eight digs along with a serving percentage of 94%. Gilbert is slated to face Hanahan in the second round of the 3A SCHSL playoffs.
