The soccer season’s end is here and teams in Lexington County will try and finish on the right foot before playoffs begin next week.
The final week of the season still has a lot at stake with a few region championships still yet to be claimed. Teams also are fighting for playoff seeding, which is based on how they did in region.
Chapin’s boys and girls teams will look to sweep the 5A Region 4 titles, but it will all come down to this week. The Eagles and River Bluff boys team were scheduled to play in a game that could shake the standings on April 23 after the Chronicle’s press deadline.
The Eagles close the season April 26 at home against Dutch Fork. A win against River Bluff secures them the region, but a win in both guarantees an undefeated region season and a top playoff seed.
The race for the girls title is even closer than the boys with two teams on Chapin’s trail. Lexington and River Bluff have one more region loss than the Eagles, meaning a Chapin slip-up this week could cost the team the title.
Lexington will have to beat Dutch Fork to stay in contention and hope River Bluff beats Chapin. If that happens, and River Bluff beats White Knoll on April 25, then there would be a three-way tie for first place.
There was movement in the 3A Region 5 boys standings after Swansea and Brookland-Cayce met last week.
The Bearcats beat the Tigers 3-1 on April 19 to jump Swansea in the standings. The Bearcats enter this week 8-2 in region, while Swansea is 7-2.
The fight for the girls title is also a two-team race entering the final week, but Gilbert still maintains its top spot from last week.
The Indians are 9-1, a half game above 8-1 Dreher. The two will meet this week on April 25 in a game that could decide who takes the region. In the previous meeting, Dreher beat Gilbert 4-1.
Other teams in Lexington County may not win their division, but they are competing near the top, which will be good enough to clinch a playoff spot.
Irmo’s boys are in second place in their region behind undefeated A.C. Flora. Both of Irmo’s conference losses came against A.C. Flora.
Airport’s girls are third behind South Aiken and North Augusta and could move up or down, depending on how this last week goes. The Eagles have one more region game, which was scheduled for April 25 against Aiken.
Batesburg-Leesville finished tied for first in the region with Strom Thurmond at 5-1. The Panthers end their regular season this week with a road game against Newberry.
Both Gray Collegiate teams will face their final tests before going to playoffs. The War Eagles clinched their region before the season even began due to forfeits.
The first round of playoff games will be on April 29 and 30. Teams that advance will have a two-day rest before the second round starts.
The championship games will be May 10 and 11 at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.
Kinlee Mozley had another explosive scoring week, hitting eight goals in three games for Gilbert’s girls.
Ismael Martinez had three goals and an assist for Swansea in its win over Horse Creek.
Darcy Ahern contributed to all four of Chapin’s goals against Dutch Fork, scoring three and assisting on the other.
Jenrry Valentin also had three goals for Swansea in the Tigers’ victory against Horse Creek
Sidney Kitts was an important contributor for Lexington this week, recording four assists against White Knoll and a goal against Providence.
