The Catch-up: Public Service Commission announces public hearings in Dominion Energy case

The South Carolina Public Service Commission recently released a schedule of public hearings in the Dominion Energy South Carolina case. 

The case is focused on Dominion Energy’s authority to “adjust and increase its retail electric rate schedules, tariffs and terms and conditions,” according to the press release. 

The public hearings will be held across the state in four different locations and on four different days.

The first hearing is May 30 at 6 p.m. at the Aiken County Government Center in Aiken, S.C. The second one is June 10 at 6 p.m. at the Bluffton Town Council Chambers in Bluffton, S.C. The third hearing is June 27 at 6 p.m. at the Lonnie Hamilton Public Services Building in North Charleston, S.C. The final hearing is July 8 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Public Service Commission Hearing Room in Columbia, S.C. 

Those wishing to testify must pre-register no later than one business day before each session on the Public Commission’s website.

Francie Keckley files to run in new S.C. Senate district

Francie Keckley, a resident of Lexington, S.C. has filed to run in the newly created State Senate District 10. 

The newly redrawn district includes all of Greenwood County as well as parts of Saluda and Lexington counties. 

Keckley said in the press release that she wants to run to bring calm back to the statehouse.

“Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade just two years ago, the General Assembly has rushed to pass extreme laws that are out of step with the views of regular South Carolinians. As the next senator for District 10, I will bring people together and be a calm voice of reason at the statehouse,” she said in the release.

Chapin Intermediate School wins national reading competition

Chapin Intermediate School won the nationwide Learning Ally’s Great Reading Games competition. 

The competition was held over seven weeks and it was designed to see which school could read the most books.

“The dedication and hard work of Chapin Intermediate School students and staff have truly paid off, showcasing our commitment to literacy and learning. We look forward to rewarding our staff and students with an ice cream treat and an extra recess,” Chapin Intermediate School Principal Brent Davis said in the press release. 

School District 5 teacher assistant wins statewide award

A kindergarten assistant in Lexington School District Five, Kayla Garrett, has received the 2023-2024 Alternative Pathways for Educator Certification (APEC) Professional Commitment Award. 

This award is given to recognize an APEC fellow “for their dedication and willingness to go above and beyond in their field experience and course work,” the press release read. 

Garrett said in the press release that she wants to continue contributing to the education field in a positive manner.

 “This recognition means the world to me! Winning this award has only fueled my enthusiasm and determination to continue making meaningful contributions in teaching! I am eager to build upon this achievement and contribute even more positively in the future.”

Lexington Woman’s Club announces 2024 Woman of Distinction

Joy Lind Moore was recently awarded the Lexington Woman’s Club annual Woman of Distinction award.

Moore taught at Greenwood Middle School, Lexington Middle School and Midlands Technical College at various points during her career. She has volunteered at Mission Lexington and has served in a variety of roles at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Lexington where she has been a member since 1990.

As part of the Lexington Woman’s Club, Moore has served as part of the Education and Libraries Community Service Committee and the Communications and Public Relations Committee.
