Local non-profit aims to stop human trafficking

CHURCH BUZZ

Human trafficking is getting a lot of attention in the news and for good reason.

There have been a number of incidents in the midlands where young women were being followed or approached by unknown men at Walmarts, malls and grocery stores.

If you are anything like me, you’re thinking, “who is doing anything about this?”

Lighthouse for Life is doing something.

Lighthouse for Life is a religious non-profit organization started 3 1/2 years ago by Andrea Lind. Their office is in Radius Church.

I first heard about it last fall from a friend, Cyndi James Jones.

I talked to the organization’s director, Jen Thompson.

It one of the most enlightening interviews I’ve done since I started this column.

I had no idea human trafficking was so pervasive.

She said that human trafficking is the second largest criminal industry in the world with 27 million victims and growing by the day. Even here in the midlands.

Their three main goals are to Educate people about human sex trafficking, Empower people to recognize and respond to trafficking, and Restore the lives of victims.

They will soon open a safe home for victims. There will be a staff of well trained and dedicated to people to help victims navigate the process of overcoming the trauma of trafficking.

If you want to know more or join their efforts, there will be a Church Leader training event on May 26 at Calvary Chapel Irmo.

Lighthouseforlife.org will give you the details.
