Small church, big support for missionaries

Posted

I have mentioned before how much I enjoy learning about small churches doing great things.
Here is another one.
Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington has a remarkable missionary support. Pastor Steve Cummins says their Faith Promise Missions, a Grace of Giving program, is steadily growing.
8 years ago, when Pastor Steve arrived, the church was supporting 8 missionaries out of the church’s regular tithe.
That was impressive for a church that typically has 60-70 people each Sunday.
But he believed that they were capable of even more.
3 years ago, he asked the congregation to prayerfully consider giving a separate offering for mission support that was over and above their regular tithe.
Their response was like the fishes and loaves story from the Bible.
The first year they raised $16,000; the second year was $32,000 and this year they are on track to exceed $36,000 for missions.
Now, they give $60 a month to 35 missionaries on the field in 34 countries.
When I asked how the congregation caught the vision so quickly, he told me that one factor was them meeting and hearing from missionaries about their work in the field.
Every Sunday in March is dedicated to missions, and they bring in missionaries to speak to the group at 10 am and 6 pm services.
One church member, Caleb Fielding felt called by God from 8 years old to take the Gospel to England. He finished Victory Bible College and is now raising support to go there next year.
“We are blessed to have an opportunity to partner with God-called missionaries who will go to the ends of the world.
“We are thankful for what God has already done and look forward to supporting new missionary efforts,” Pastor Steve said
