What are podcasts?

Have you heard the word ‘podcast’? If you don’t have friends or family members who listen to them, you might have heard the term on the news. Podcasts are episodic digital files, kind of like talk radio broadcasts. Generally, they are released as audio. They are sometimes released with video. They can also have pdf or epub supplementary material you can read. If you have a smartphone, tablet, or computer you can start listening to free podcasts today. If you’re already subscribed to podcasts, you’re ahead of the curve! Next week I’ll share how to find new podcasts that are relevant to your interests and hobbies.
Public radio networks like BBC and NPR were quick to hop on the trend. They launched their own podcasts when the technology became prevalent in the mid-2000s. Now anyone can create their own podcast with the right know-how. That makes it easy for folks to create broadcasts on any subject which interests them.
There are podcasts meant to teach listeners about every topic under the sun. They range from business and finance to parenting and relationships. There are also fiction podcasts which play out like radio dramas. You can also find docuseries podcasts about small-town life, true crime, and more.
Podcasts can teach us a great deal. They are often a great free resource for those of us who enjoy talk radio or audiobooks, but who want more variety. Let me know if you're already a podcast listener at katie.lexchron@gmail.com . I'd love to share some of your favorite broadcasts with other readers.
