Baby born with abnormal esophagus needs operation

Posted

A fundraiser is being held to support the infant child of West Columbia Police Sgt. Trip Holland and his family. The baby needs an operation.

The fundraiser is Saturday, March 6, and Sunday March 7, at Calloway’s Sports Bar & Grill. Dinners are $10 each and you can pre-order. Calloway’s is at 2410 Augusta Rd, West Columbia, in the Danwood Shopping Center, behind Sonic.

Sgt. Holland’s child, Noah, and his twin brother were born at 32 weeks on Nov. 18. After their arrival, doctors learned that Noah has what is called esophageal atresia (EA) and tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), which is an abnormal connection of the trachea and esophagus, in addition to his esophagus not connecting to his stomach. He received the repair on Nov. 19, less than 24 hours old.

He seemed to recover well but after a few weeks, he started presenting signs of tracheomalacia, also known as a collapsed windpipe. This would require surgery not offered in Columbia so his surgeon referred him to a doctor in Washington, DC.

Noah’s parents researched and found a surgeon that specializes in EA/TEF kids at Boston Children’s Hospital. Originally, the surgery that would repair the collapsed windpipe was scheduled for Jan. 28, but after his arrival, his new team has decided they would like to push his surgery out a couple more weeks to see him grow a little stronger before performing another major surgery.
