Blowfish fans donate bats, balls for Belize

Sybil Jarrells knows what playing baseball can do for a child.
Her son, Ben Brantley, played baseball which earned him a baseball scholarship at West Georgia University.
A little over a month ago, on a mission trip to Belize, she met with Pastor Victor Hernandez at Toledo Faith Outreach Christian Center.
He told her that 90 children wanted to play baseball but they had only 2 gloves, 2 balls, 2 bats and a batter’s helmet.
She committed to Pastor Hernandez that she would find equipment for all his kids.
She is well on her way to outfitting all 90 players and 90 more that may be interested.
At last Saturday night’s last game of the Lexington County Blowfish season, fans donated 28 bats, 12 pairs of baseball shoes (5 pairs for small players), 14 batters gloves, 2 sets of catchers protection, 2 catchers mitts, 18 batters helmets, 10 large and 9 small gloves, and 6 equipment bags.
“Words alone are not sufficient to say thank you to the entire Blowfish organization and fans,” Jarrells said.
Now she and her husband Ralph plan to ship the equipment to Belize for a celebration Dec. 1.
It will be a giant Christmas gift to the children.
“Interest is growing,” her husband, a retired marketing executive, said.
“A video production company “Little Black Rocking Chair” is planning a documentary for ESPN.
“A local television producer, Chris Delcamp, has expressed interest in covering the event,” Ralph said.
James1:27, a 501(c)(3) ministry, has adopted the Belize Baseball project, making donations for shipping costs tax deductible.
Send donations to Belize Baseball, PO Box 5535, Columbia, SC 28250. Tax deductible letters will be sent to donors. For information call 704-906-3622.
