The nuclear power industry wants help from Congressional corona virus stimulus billions.
This includes Georgia Power’s floundering Vogtle twin nuclear reactor project across the Savannah River, said Tom Clements of Savannah River Watch and a critic of the $9 billion failure of the SC Electric & Gas-Santee Cooper nuclear fiasco here.
Before this week’s vote, the industry asked congressional leaders for help to manage economic turmoil.
Their letter requested:
• 30% investment tax credit for certain expenses.
• Waive regulatory fees.
• Sick leave money.
• Help for designated essential employees.
Waiving fees has been on the industry wish list for years as they look for ways to better compete.
“Our member companies are anticipating – or are already experiencing – severe financial strain as product orders are delayed or canceled, as industrial electricity demand falls, and as workforce availability becomes increasingly constrained,” Nuclear Energy Institute CEO Maria Korsnick wrote.
Corona virus fears prompted the New Mexico congressional delegation to press the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to extend a public comment period for a proposed nuclear waste storage facility in the state.
In a letter to NRC Chairwoman Kristine Svinicki, Democrat lawmakers asked for a delay due to bans onlarge gatherings such as a public comment meetings.
New Mexico lawmakers have opposed the site, citing fears that without a permanent disposal site in Nevada, the New Mexico site could become long-term storage.
South Carolina has been promised that radioactive material at the Savannah River Site 45 minutes from Lexington County would be shipped out of state.
