Posted

A natural gas leak had Lexington traffic at a standstill yesterday.

All lanes of the 5400 block on Sunset Blvd./US-378 were temporarily closed and 10 businesses evacuated because of the leak.

The leak was detected around 3 pm Tuesday, according to Lexington Police Department tweets.

The evacuated businesses included:

  • Ruby Tuesday
  • Synovus Bank
  • NTB Tire
  • Security Federal Bank
  • Office Depot
  • First Community Bank
  • Smashburger
  • Vitamin Shop
  • Mattress Firm
  • Marcos Pizza

Residents who lived in nearby neighborhoods were allowed to return to their homes, but getting there was the challenge.

Lexington Middle School and River Bluff High School buses were rerouted around closed lanes.

All lanes of Sunset Blvd. were reopened by 10:30 pm, according to Lexington PD.

No word yet on what caused the gas leak.
