Judge blocks MOX shutdown

Posted

A federal judge has blocked the proposed shutdown of the mixed oxide fuel (MOX) project at the Savannah River site.
Judge Michelle Childs sided with Attorney General Allan Wilson's argument that shutting down the $5.2 billion nuclear fuel program 30 minutes from Lexington County would irreparably harm the state.
The MOX Project turns weapons-grade plutonium into fuel used in commercial nuclear reactors.
The state successfully argued that shutting down the project would doom the state to being the nation's permanent dumping ground for plutonium since Congress has approved  no other disposal method.
"The court's decision is based upon the rule of law and common sense," said Wilson.
"This is a victory for the people of South Carolina and the safety of all South Carolinians."
The state is suing the Department of Energy to protect the MOX Project permanently.
