Spring breakers flock to Lake Murray

Many ignore physical distancing rule on lakes, rivers

As the weather warms, you may be itching to get out on Lake Murray and our local rivers.

Boaters and sunbathers need to remember physical distancing rule applies on the water.

The CDC recommends keeping 6 feet apart to prevent the spread of covid-19.

Gov. Henry McMaster last week announced gatherings of more than 3 people may be dispersed.

That doesn’t apply to families or businesses serving customers, but “boisterous, unruly crowds.”

McMaster said enforcement will be up to police discretion.

The SC Department of Natural Resources will patrol Lake Murray to keep people safe.

DNR spokesperson Kaley Lawrimore said, “DNR officers will be using their discretion on a case by case basis.”

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department also patrols Lake Murray during the summer months.

Capt. Adam Myrick of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department told the Chronicle DNR has more resources to handle lake patrols.

“We’re there at Bundrick Island and always ready to assist other agencies responding to incidents on or near the water,” Capt. Myrick said.

Lawrimore said DNR officers will maintain watch on the rivers.

Crowds gathering on the Broad, Saluda and Congaree Rivers in Lexington County will be subject to the same rules.

A Lake Murray resident told the Chronicle that upwards of 1,200 partiers gathered on the lake last weekend.

“This is Spring Break coming to South Carolina. The Governor closes the schools to stop the spread of the virus and creates an unintended consequence,” he said.

“It is, of course, a very serious matter and will result in additional tragedy for our families.”
