University of South Carolina students' return has had an alarming effect.
Columbia covid-19 cases climbed dramatically to 1,083 in the last 7 days.

404 cases Saturday and 193 Sunday were the highest increases.

That was a 2-day total of 597 cases and the highest in the state.
In the same 7 days, Lexington County had only 249 cases.
That's less than 25% of the Columbia cases.
Yet deaths remained low in both counties.
In 7 days, Lexington had 6 deaths, Richland 9.
On the 1st day of classes, Thursday, Aug. 20, Carolina reported 46 active cases.
That’s an increase of 511 cases in about a week.
Of the current active cases, 553 are students and 4 are employees, the university said.

"Cases at USC likely contributed to the increase in Richland County," said Laura Renwick of DHEC.

"Cases are reported based on an individual's state and county of current residence.

"College students residing in South Carolina to go to school would be included in South Carolina’s numbers, reported out by county based on their current address."

6 more South Carolinians lost their lives to covid-19 Sunday.

None of them were in Lexington or Richland counties.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control Monday announced:

651 new confirmed cases and 26 new probable cases.

12 additional confirmed deaths and no new probable deaths.

6 of those deaths occurred earlier in August,

Total confirmed cases to date are 117,333, probable cases 1,659, confirmed deaths 2,588 and 132 probable deaths.

4,177 individual test results were reported Monday statewide.

Of those, 15.6% tested positive as infected.

That means 84.4% tested negative as uninfected.
