GEORGE BRYAN COLUMN - Young local golfers shine

Posted

Caleb Proveaux of Gilbert High School placed 3rd in the Palmetto Amateur by shooting a four round total of 278.
His University of South Carolina Gamecock teammate Jamie Wilson won the event 2 shots ahead. Proveaux was in contention from the opening round when he shot 68.
He followed it with a 66 and closed with an even par 70. His game is solid heading into this week’s South Carolina Golf Association Amateur Championship at Thornblade Club in Greenville.
Proveaux joins other local exempt players including Michael Sims, Zach McLain and Mark Swygert.
One of the most encouraging facts about golf is how long one can continue to grow and improve. Bernhard Langer, 61, won the British Senior Open this past week in difficult weather conditions. Typically, weather exposes all physical and mental weakness, but the 2-time champion at The Masters and most dominant player in Senior PGA Tour history seemed to get stronger as winds with rain got worse.
Golf is quite unique and a game that experience matters much. Now for some local youth golf news:

In the Girls 10-12 Division, Mia Andrade of Chapin was medalist.  Lindsey Hoile took medalist honors in the Girls 13-18 Division.
