Blowfish fall again in extra innings

Another night, another heartbreaking loss in extra innings at Sparrow Stadium.

The Lexington County Blowfish were defeated 6-5 in 10 innings by the Florence RedWolves Monday night. It was the 4th straight loss for the Blowfish (5-13) and 3rd during that span in extra innings.

Lexington held a 5-2 lead despite losing starter Brett Fulk at the end of the 2nd inning. After striking out Matthew Barrow for the 3rd out, Fulk was ejected for reportedly saying something which drew the attention of the homeplate umpire.

Relievers Jacob Rye of Gilbert and Shelton Reed combined to allow just 1 run in 5 innings of work. In the top 8th, Florence rallied off reliever Jared Drayton for 2 runs on a single by Grey Epps to tie the game at 5-5.

The top 10th saw all 3 Blowfish batters strike out, enabling Florence (9-11) to win the game on the international tiebreaker rule in which each team opens an at-bat with runners on 1st and 2nd.

The Blowfish were stymed once again by leaving 10 stranded baserunners. They also committed 4 errors and 11 in the last 2 games after just 18 through the 1st 15 games.

Lexington County will attempt to salvage at least 1 game in the 5-game Interestate 20 series Tuesday with a doubleheader with 2 7-inning games starting at 5 p.m. Game 2 is designated as Dog Day Tuesday as fans can bring their favorite canine to the ballpark for free.
