Chapin leads way among local schools in Carlisle Cup

Outgoing Chapin High principal Akil Ross summed up his school’s championship success in one sentence.

“You can’t spell “Champion” without Chapin,” said Ross after watching the boys’ soccer team claim its third straight championship, second in a row in Class 4A and the school’s 51st athletics title overall.

Chapin would add a baseball title to go with the S.C. High School League-best 14th championship in competitive cheer. Both the wrestling team and girls’ lacrosse also finished state runners-up for the second straight year.

This success translated into Chapin having the highest point total of any Chronicle Country school, according to a points system used by the S.C. Athletic Administrators Association to measure the state’s top athletics programs.

The school finished with a score of 860 in the annual Carlisle Cup, formerly known as the Director’s Cup, which utilizes a point system to gauge each school’s cumulative postseason success in 11 boys and 11 girls sports.

Chapin’s point total was third best among Class 4A schools and sixth among all schools. It was followed locally by future Region 5-5A rivals Lexington (775) and River Bluff (685), which placed third and fourth, respectively, in Class 5A along with sixth place Dutch Fork

(630).

Lexington claimed the Class 5A girls golf title for a state-record 13th time and was state runner-up in girls’ soccer. River Bluff came away with the girls’ tennis title and was runner-up for the second consecutive year in wrestling. Dutch Fork won its ninth competitive cheer title and repeated as Class 5A football champion.

Gilbert was the highest-ranked Chronicle Country school in Class 3A, followed by Batesburg-Leesville

(370), which placed fifth in Class 2A.

Bishop England was the overall Carlisle Cup winner with 1,280 points. It was followed by Wando, Dorman, Hilton Head Island and Eastside.
