The Chapin High School softball team completed a 5-game run in the Byrnes Invitational at Tyler River Park Softball Complex in Duncan Saturday.
In Saturday’s opening game, the Lady Eagles suffered their 1st loss of the season by a 10-3 score to eventual tournament champion Berkeley. It was held to 3 hits by the Lady Stags, who defeated Mauldin 9-7 in the final to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Game 2 saw the Lady Eagles face the host team and 3-time defending Class 5A Upper State champions and last year's state runner-up to Lexington. They jumped out to a 6-0 lead after getting a 2-run double from Dallas Mayers and an RBI single from Andee Dircks in the Bottom 1st and RBI fielder’s choices by Leah Cabe and Mayers and another run-scoring single by Dircks in the Bottom 2nd.
The Lady Rebels rallied for 5 unanswered runs in the Top 3rd and tied the game at 6-6 with 2 outs in the Top 6th.
The game was settled on international tiebreaker rules in which each team starts an at-bat with a runner on 2nd base. J.F. Byrnes managed to score in the top 7th, while Chapin stranded runners stranded on 1st and 2nd to lose 7-6.
Mayers finished with 3 RBI, followed by Dircks with 2 RBI.
In Game 3, Cabe and Ella Majchrzak each pitched 3 shutout innings in the 3-2 win over Fort Mill.
Dircks broke a scoreless tie in the Bottom 4th with a 2-run homer. Mayers closed out the scoring with a sole home run in the Bottom 6th.
