The 2018 season ended Thursday for Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24 at the American Legion Southeast Region at McCrary Park.

It started with the rescheduled opening contest with host team Randolph County.

Chapin/Newberry took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Price Alexander of Dutch Fork High School scored on a throwing error by catcher Landon Smith and Robert King scored fellow Chapin High alumnus Will Kroske on a groundout.

Randolph County responded with eight unanswered runs, half coming in the bottom of the third. Post 45 tied the game as two baserunners raced home safely on a throwing error by pitcher Deric Hanko. Spencer Lanier put Randolph County ahead with a double and Austin Curry added an RBI single.

Tristan Marsh extended the lead to 6-2 in the fourth with a 2-run single. Byrce Marsh then followed in the fifth with a 2-run homer.

This set up an All-South Carolina American Legion elimination game a couple of hours later against Sumter Post 15. Chapin/Newberry defeated Sumter twice during its run to the state American Legion title.

Post 15 was up for the challenge this time, coming away with a 5-0 shutout win. For the second straight game, Chapin/Newberry was held to three hits and committed three errors to finish with five on the day.

It was deja vu as Post 193/24 fell behind 3-0 in the third inning thanks in part to a throwing error. This time, it was two errant tosses by catcher Tanner Folk which put Sumter up 2-0 and was followed by an RBI double by Daulton Dobbs.

An error by Aaron Copeland at third base allowed Tray Yates to score and put Post 15 up 4-0. Andrew Twitty added insurance in the top 7th with an RBI single.

Sumter will face the loser of Thursday’s contest between Lyon County (KY) Post 68 and Tallahassee (FLA) Post 13 at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Chapin/Newberry ends the season with a 20-7 mark.
