Chronicle Country teams a win away from titles

One more win.

It’s where a trio of Chronicle County teams find themselves after taking care of business to open their respective state finals.

Both the Chapin and River Bluff baseball teams had lopsided Game 1 victories this past Saturday.

In West Columbia, visiting Chap-in capitalized off a series of hit batsman and a dominating performance from University of South Carolina signee Cade Austin to blank host team Airport 8-0 in the opening game of the Class 4A final.

Over in “The Swamp”, the Gators routed Dorman 9-1 to start the Class 5A final. They were led by three hits and five RBI from Grey Burnett and a six scoreless innings from winning pitcher Ricky Williams.

River Bluff is a win away from erasing the memory of last year’s series loss to Northwestern. Such is the motivation for the White Knoll softball team which is involved in a Class 5A title rematch with defending champion J.F. Byrnes.

A year after getting routed at home 13-1 in Game 1, the Lady Timberwolves held on for a 2-1 victory over the Lady Rebels.

Pitcher Andrea Lyon held the Lady Rebels to three hits, one through the first six innings, and struck out two in the win. She also accounted for the go-ahead RBI on a towering solo home run well over the wall and trees in leftfield in the bottom of the sixth.

The only thing which stood in the way of all three teams wrapping up state titles as of presstime was Mother Nature. Weather reports indicated heavy showers over the next week.

Regardless of when the games are played, all three teams will be ready to seize the moment.

“It’s a new team, a new opponent, but absolutely, we’ve been here,” River Bluff head coach Mark Bonnette said. “We can build, we can understand it, we’ve been here. The job is not done. We know that we’re going to get their best effort... and we know that and we’ll be ready to go.”

“We’ve got to stay within ourselves, control our own destiny, work hard, stay poised, stay focused, stay tough on defense and get the hits to help our pitcher,” White Knoll softball coach April Farr said.

“We’re playing this thing like we’re behind one,” Chapin head coach Scott McLeod said. “We’re not taking anything for granted.”
