Early run barrage lifts Blowfish to home victory

“Thirsty Thursday” was a fitting title for Thursday’s Coastal Plain League contest at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.

Both the Lexington County Blowfish and Martinsville Mustangs were each looking to quench their thirst for victory in the non-South Division matchup.

Sparked by a 10-hit offensive attack and 5 scoreless innings from Bennett Nance, the Blowfish jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 11-6 win over the Mustangs to snap a 2-game losing streak.

Jordan Holladay, who entered his name June 5 in the transfer portal to depart the University of South Carolina, had 3 RBI and Houston Wright and James McConnon each had 3 hits and 2 RBI along with Zacchaeus Rasberry to help stake Lexington County out to a 10-0 advantage.

On the mound, Nance allowed just 2 hits and struck out 7 to pick up the victory. The shutout was spoiled in the 6th when Martinsville scored 3 runs off Blowfish relievers Turner Scruggs and Jacob Rye of Gilbert.

Lexington County opened things with a 6-run 2nd inning off Mustangs’ starter Thomas Butler. James McCannon, Rasberry and Wright each had RBI singles and Holliday drove in 2 runs with a single.

Rasberry drove in a run in the bottom 3rd on a fielder’s choice and McCannon scored on an throwing error by Mustangs’ catcher Hank Moore.

In the bottom 4th, Wright homered over the righfield wall for his 2nd straight home run at the stadium. The Blowfish then made it 10-0 after Holladay drew an RBI walk.

Lexington County’s relievers struggled the rest of the way, walking 8 batters.  It started after Turner Scruggs hit a batter and walked 3 batters which resulted in a run.

Rye entered the game and gave up a 2-run single that made it 10-3. The Mustangs picked up another run in the top 7th with an RBI double by Josh Smith off Sheldon Reed of Clemson University.

Brady Smith entered the game in the 8th for the Blowfish. Like Scruggs, he was unable to retire a batter with 2 walks and a hit batsman to load the bases.

Martinsville (3-7) capitalized with a RBI sacrifice fly by Jack Capobianco and RBI single by Smith. In the bottom 8th, McConnon collected his 3rd hit of the game with an RBI single.

Lexington County (3-5) heads on the road for another non-South Division game against Gastonia on Friday.

Miss Columbia Teen to

Hold Pajama Fund Drive

This Saturday, the Lexington County Blowfish will not only look to snap a 9-game home losing streak to the Savannah Bananas.

Miss Columbia Teen, Kellan Fenegan of River Bluff High School, will hold the 2nd annual Pajama Fund Drive for Kellan's Kloset which donates to foster care children in the Midlands.

Kellan's Kloset donated more than 10,000 items to Foster Care in the last year and are looking for a large turnout for the contest against the Florence RedWolves.

In edition, Fenegan has organized a group of Disney Princesses and other loved characters to raise money for Children's Miracle Network. Donations stay local at the Prisma Health Children's Hospital in Columbia.
