GEORGE BRYAN COLUMN - 2020 WINTER TOUR COMES TO AN END

Posted

The 28th season of the ICRC Winter Youth golf Tour ended on a glorious Sunday afternoon at Charwood Country Club.
The weather was spectacular and the golf course was in excellent condition. Charwood has been the program’s host club since 1996.
Before recognizing the “Winter Tour “ youth players, first, our  lesson.
I listened to Dr. Bob Rotella this past week in Greensboro, N.C. He spoke to the Carolinas PGA members and apprentices and reminded the group that a definition of golf genius is the ability to simultaneously think logically and illogically.
I’ll boil it down to the application that suits me and is real. When son Wesley got started playing,  he enjoyed trying to hit the flop shot. However, he was not very good at it.
He could hit the low bump and run exceptionally well. It puzzled and even frustrated me he kept trying to hit the flop shot. Before I got too frustrated with watching Wesley keep trying the same shot with low to no success, I had the chance to ask Dr Rotella about this situation.
He simply asked me why do think he keeps trying to hit the shot? My answer was apparently he thinks he can without any evidence it was even possible.
Dr Rotella then asked where did he get the idea from? At this point, I still wasn’t sure where he was taking me. I said ‘the tour players, of course, mainly Phil Mickelson.’
Then he asked, how firm are the greens on the PGA Tour? What kind of shot is required to have success there? What are Wesley’s dreams?
You get the picture, I’m sure. Like many great instructors, Dr Rotella gave me the answer by asking questions.
After I played in 2 such events, I installed a practice green in my yard for my children and students to study, practice and learn.
