A late rally came up short for the Brookland-Cayce boys basketball team Saturday night at Marlboro County.
The Bearcats fell 52-50 in the opening round of the SC High School League Class 3A playoffs.
Aubrey Richardson had 15 points and Christian Ferguson and Christian Hall, whose 3-pointer with 2 seconds left brought Brookland-Cayce to within a point, each had 9 points.
Brookland-Cayce fell behind 8-0 before Troy McCants made a field goal with 3:07 left in the 2nd quarter. The Bearcats outscored Marlboro County 15-8 in the 2nd quarter and got within 3 points before trailing at halftime 21-17.
In the 2nd half, Dreveon Scott scored 12 of his 14 points and the Bulldogs led as many as 14 points. Down 49-41 with less than 2 minutes left, Brookland-Cayce closed the game on a 9-3 run.
After time expired, the officials added 2 seconds on the clock. Scott was fouled and made 1-2 free throws with .8 seconds remaining. Brookland-Cayce attempted a long pass downcourt, but were unable to set up for a game-tying or game-winning shot.
