Lexington County’s struggles against the Macon Bacon continued Wednesday with a 9-7 loss at historic Luther Williams Field.

South Carolina’s Wes Clarke put the Blowfish up 1-0 in the 2nd with an RBI single. The 2 teams proceeded to trade 5-run rallies, starting with the Bacon in the bottom 3rd.

A 3-run homer by Robert Brooks off reliever Cameron Reeves was the big blow in the rally for Macon.

Lexington County answered with 5 runs in the top 4th. After loading the bases with no outs, the Blowfish scored 2 runs on RBI walks by Jon Cucinotta and Tyler Corbitt of Airport High School.

Brennan Reback followed with an RBI fielder’s choice and Matt McDermott put the Blowfish ahead with a 2-run single. McDermott’s RBI tied teammate and Gamecock Brennan Milone for the team lead with 7.

Macon regained in the lead in the bottom 4th on an RBI single by Woullard and RBI double by Gambill. Woullard continued his hot hitting in the 6th with a 2-run double.

It was Woullard’s 4th RBI to match his 4 hits.

Lexington County threatened in the top 9th. After Luis Orr and Brennan Reback reached to open the inning, Brady Allen hit a 1-out RBI double to bring the go-ahead run to the plate.

Zachery Iverson popped out to shortstop and Milone struck out to end the game.

The loss dropped Lexington County to 4-2 overall, 1-2 in the Southern Summerball Series. It now trails Savannah and Macon by 1 game.

The Blowfish return to Lexington for a 3-game homestand starting Thursday against the Lake Murray Purple Martins. It should receive reclarification before the opening pitch on the status of fans attending games from the governor’s office.

Gov. Henry McMaster has barred fan attendance for “spectator sports” like the Blowfish in light of increased pandemic numbers.
