Lexington wins A.C. Flora Tip-off opener

Saturday saw three Chronicle Country girls’ basketball teams tip off play at the A.C. Flora Tip-off.

Lexington came out the lone victor, defeating Airport 56-46 behind 21 points from University of South Carolina-bound senior Olivia Thompson and 11 from Brooke Foulks.

“I really love these tournaments,” Lexington head coach Molly Goodrich said. “There’s a lot of good (teams) here and it’s just something good for us to see where we’re at before we actually start regular season games.”

In the second contest, Irmo was defeated by Ridge View 54-45.

All three teams return to action Monday in Columbia.

LEXINGTON 56, AIRPORT 46

The Lady Wildcats led 12-8 after the first quarter until the Lady Eagles scored nine unanswered points to take the lead.

With the score tied at 20-20, Thompson connected on 3-pointers in Lexington’s final two possessions in the final 20 seconds to give her team a 26-23 advantage.

The Lady Wildcats led as many as 12 points in the second half despite 13 points from Airport’s India Canderlario and nine from Jayla Jamison.

Goodrich acknowledged her team played “a little bit sloppy” in their first game. She’s hopeful the Lady Wildcats will show a more improved effort Monday against defending Class 5A champion Spring Valley at the new A.C. Flora High School gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.

“We just have to take care of the basketball better,” Goodrich said. “We have to move the ball a little bit more. I know we can play a lot better, but our first game, every single year, is a little sloppy. It’s not something that we’re really happy with right now. Even though we won, our lockerroom isn’t very happy right now. But we always get better every game and that’s just something that we can do.”

RIDGE VIEW 54, IRMO 45

A poor shooting first half put the Lady Yellow Jackets in a 28-14 halftime hole.

In the third quarter, Irmo outscored Ridge View 19-9 to help get within three points. Leading the comeback charge was Maliyah Mason, who finished with 12 points, and Ehrial Wagstaff who added 10.

Ridge View outscored Irmo 17-12 in the fourth quarter, including three points on a foul and technical foul called on the Lady Yellow Jackets.

Irmo will face Richland Northeast at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the old gymnasium.
