(UPDATE) LOWER STATE CHAMPS - Lexington, Gilbert place 1st in girls' golf

It was business as usual on the golf course Monday for 1 Lexington School District One team and a historic time for another.
The Lexington High School girls' golf team rolled to victory at the SC High School League Class 5A Lower State tournament. The Lady Wildcats shot an even par 252 to retain the title for the 5th consecutive year and 10th in the last 11 years.
"It’s certainly different in some aspects, but the golf is still the same," Lexington head coach Charles Smith said. "We are just taking as many precautions as possible to keep everyone healthy and well."
Lexington finished ahead of Wando by 25 strokes. St. James and Carolina Forest tied for 3rd,  River Bluff placed 5th and Chapin finished in 7th place.
Molly Hardwick of Lexington won top individual honors with a score of 6-under-par 66. She finished 3 strokes ahead of St. James' Adrian Anderson and 5 strokes ahead of teammate and defending state champion Karlee Vardas and Alayna Fortenberry of Carolina Forest. Isabella Rawl tied for 6th place.
The Lady Wildcats will now look to reclaim the Class 5A title next week at the Country Club of Lexington starting Monday. Blythewood is the defending champion.
"It’s definitely in the back of our minds, but the goal here at Lexington doesn’t change and that is to compete for a state championship every year and our players understand that," Smith said.
Meanwhile, the Gilbert High School girls' golf team made school history. The Lady Indians won the Class 3A Lower State Qualifier for the 1st time at Diamondback Golf Course in Loris.
Gilbert shot 36-over-par to beat out 3-time defending champion Oceanside Collegiate.
Head coach Dru Nix said her team has played the past 2 weeks like a 2nd ranked team. She also pointed out the Lady Indians defeated Chesnee recently during a tournament for the 1st time in 5 tries.
Kennedy Gooding was the top individual medalist at even par. Teammate Alexis Hodge finished 3rd and Edie Raine Hardee tied for 10th.
"She sets the tone for us," said Nix about Gooding.
Ranked 2nd in Class 3A and 4th overall in the state girls golf standings, the 5-year-old program will head to Hackler Golf Club on the campus of Coastal Carolina next week among the top contenders along with Upper State champion and top-ranked Chesnee.
If Gilbert is to win, Nix said her team needs her 3rd and 4th golfers to play as well as her top 2.

VOLLEYBALL
Gilbert 3, Chapin 0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-11)

The Lady Indians defeat the Lady Eagles in non-region play to improve to 17-6 overall after losing 2 matches this past Saturday to Nation Ford.
Gilbert will face Orangeburg-Wilkinson at 6 pm Tuesday at Swansea High School to determine the top seed out of Region 5-3A.
