Soccer playoffs have kicked off around Lexington County with many teams seeking to make a deep run for a chance at winning a state championship.
21 boys and girls teams in Lexington qualified for the postseason. 10 of those teams began the playoffs at home against a lower-seeded opponent.
Last week, teams used the regular season to finalize their region placements. A few even clinched their conference championship in the final week.
River Bluff’s boys earned two region wins last week to earn the region title. The Gators narrowly beat Dutch Fork 3-2 and shutout Chapin the following game, which was a winner-take-all for the conference.
The Gators’ win gave head coach Phil Savitz’s team home-field advantage in the opening rounds of the playoffs. The long-time coaching legend is seeking ring No. 16 in what was announced to be his final season at the helm.
While the Eagles boys finished second, the first got the job done, winning their final two region games to claim the conference championship.
Swansea’s boys and both Gray Collegiate teams won their regions and began the playoffs at home as a top seed.
Despite not winning the region, many more Chronicle teams were scheduled to host at least one game after finishing at least second in their conference.
The action got started April 29 with the majority of qualified boys teams beginning their playoff paths. Nine games were played, and the local teams won all but two of those contests.
River Bluff, Chapin, Brookland-Cayce, Swansea, Gray Collegiate and Batesburg-Leesville were all impressed with their play. All six of those teams held their opponents scoreless while racking up goals themselves, combining for 40 goals.
Girls action was scheduled to begin Tuesday after the Chronicle’s press deadline. Four of those teams played at home.
The second round of games is also this week with games taking place Wednesday for the boys and Thursday for the girls. The boys matchups are set with a few potentially exciting matchups scheduled.
Eight boys teams made it to the second round and five will continue to host. Home-field advantage is huge in high school with the higher-seeded team having more time to prepare without having to travel on a bus.
Should any teams advance to round three, those games will be played on May 3 for the boys and May 4 for the girls. The semifinal and championship rounds are next week. The title games will be played at Columbia’s Memorial Stadium on May 10 and 11.
