The Airport Eagles defeated the Midland Valley Mustangs 7-0 at home on Saturday afternoon, moving to 9-1 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in region games.

The victory for the Eagles capped off a three-game sweep of Midland Valley beginning on Monday, which followed last week’s three-game sweep of the Aiken Fighting Green Hornets. Airport is on a six-game win streak, out-scoring their two opponents 59-1 in the six games.

The Eagles got a fantastic showing from junior pitcher Hunter Epps, who pitched a six innings shutout and coughed up just six hits. A perfect inning from senior Cam Atkins finished off the seventh and final shutout inning for the Eagles to claim the victory. This was their fourth consecutive shutout performance as a team.

“I couldn’t get the slider there today but the fastball was putting them down,” said Epps. “The defense, like always, was fielding the baseball and I can always count on them.”

On the offensive end, Epps hit two singles, a double, and a walk, while stealing a base and scoring two runs. In the entire series, Epps hit 6-10 with two doubles, four stolen bases, and five runs scored.

“He plays the game the right way, he works hard every day, and he gets exactly what he deserves,” said head coach Casey Bradwell. “He’s not scared of anything.”

Epps’ outing saw many crucial moments that maintained the shutout. In the bottom of the second, Epps caught a pop-up on a bunt attempt and threw out an untagged runner at second base to get a clutch double play. Epps survived the bases loaded and runners on second and third in the third and fifth innings, respectively.

The timely defensive play was capped in the sixth inning when third baseman Landon Jeffcoat made a diving stop to throw out the Midland Valley runner thanks to an impressive stretch from Atkins, who was playing first base then.

“We throw it over the plate and we play defense,” said Bradwell. “In high school baseball that’s the recipe for success.”

Epps’ three base hits were part of eight total for the Eagles, as the team also worked five walks, seeing plenty of volume on the basepaths. Airport also saw some really productive at-bats from catcher Price Jackson, who went 2-3 with an RBI single and an RBI double.

“They bought into our approach and they’re not scared to get a bunt down, they’re not scared to do things,” said Bradwell. “They’re confident kids, and they’re pretty good.”

The Airport Eagles return to the diamond on Monday when they take on the South Aiken Thoroughbreds on the road at 7 p.m.
