Camden Post 17 was 1 out away from moving a step closer to clinching the South Carolina American Legion League 3 title Tuesday night at Lexington Sports Complex.
Host team Lexington Post 7 had other ideas. Down 7-2, it rallied for 5 runs in the bottom 7th to tie the game.
In the bottom 12th, Brett McEwen of Batesburg-Leesville High School hit a walkoff RBI single to score Matt Willis of Gray Collegiate and give Lexington Post 7 the 8-7 victory.
It was just the second loss of the season for Camden (11-2, 6-2), while Lexington improved to 7-5 overall, 4-3 in League III.
Camden (11-2, 5-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in Top 4th off starter Aaron White. Lexington answered with a RBI single by Noah Huffmaker, who had a team-high 3 hits, in the bottom half of the inning.
In the Top 5th, J.C. LeGrand tripled for his 3rd RBI of the contest. Sawyer Reeves added an RBI double to extend Camden's lead to 6-1.
Wyatt Keisler doubled for Lexington in the bottom 4th to make it 6-2. Aaron White was relieved in the 5th by Nate Roof and he allowed just 1 earned run and on a steal of homeplate by Post 17's Jaiden Garner and finished with 7 strikeouts.
The 7th inning comeback started for Lexington as Willis scored on an outfield error. McEwen then hit into a fielder's choice to score Noah Lebron and brought Post 7 to within 7-4.
A single by Huffmaker and walk by Chris Rikard loaded the bases resulted in a pitching change for Camden. John Lanier of Class 5A runner-up Blythewood entered the game in place of Alex Canino to face Tyde Cooper.
The Lexington High product belted Lanier's pitch to the leftfield wall and cleared the bases for a game-tying 3-run double.
The game remained tied until Willis opened the 12th with a single for his 2nd hit of the game.  He then moved to 2nd on Lebron's sacrifice bunt and scored on McEwen's 2-strike single.
Lexington will take part in the Palmetto Invitational tournament at South Florence High School this weekend. It will open play at 5 p.m. Friday against Hope Mills Post 32. They will play 2 more games at South Florence before closing out play Sunday at Legion Field in Florence.
Camden returns to action June 25 at home against Sumter Post 15 in a non-League III contest.
