Are you at risk for shingles?

Have you heard of shingles?
It’s a painful rash that usually develops on one side of the body, often the face or torso.
It causes blisters that scab over in 7-10 days and clear up normally within 2 to 4 weeks.
The long-lasting pain that comes with it, called posttherpetic neuralgia, could last months or years.
If you’ve had the chickenpox, you are at risk of developing shingles.
People 60 and older have 2 options for shingles vaccines.
Zostavax been used since 2006. Shingrix was licensed in 2017 by the FDA.
The vaccine has a 90% success rate, according to the CDC.
The bad news is there is a shortage of shingles vaccines.
Immunizations have increased to higher rates than ever, said GlaxoSmithKline, the British pharmaceutical company that created Shingrix.
The vaccine takes 6-9 months to make and 2-3 weeks for delivery. This is why we are currently experiencing a shortage.
The company has planned for significantly more doses in 2019 and hopes to meet demand within 3 years.
Worried about paying for this vaccine? Medicare Part D covers it. Check with your insurance company. For help paying for vaccines, visit http://www.merck.com/merckhelps/vaccines/home.html .
