In the second installment of the Chronicle’s Athlete of the Week poll, it was another loaded field of highly competitive performers.
On the male side, the nominees were Irmo quarterback A.J. Brand, Gilbert quarterback Drake Braddock and Lexington running back Torie Jones after big performances underneath the Friday night lights.
On the female side, Chapin middle blocker and outside hitter Katelyn Long, White Knoll middle blocker Taylor O’Neil and River Bluff libero Masyn McClanahan were all nominated after great weeks on the volleyball court.
Gilbert Indians quarterback Drake Braddock earned male Athlete of the Week honors after he threw for an impressive 329 yards and five touchdowns in their big 49-35 win over South Aiken.
The Gilbert offense picked up almost 15 yards per Braddock passing attempt, displaying impressive efficiency. This season, Braddock has thrown for almost 400 yards and six touchdowns.
Chapin middle blocker and outside hitter Katelyn Long earned female Athlete of the Week honors after an impressive performance resulted in a big win for the Eagles.
Long was credited with 12 kills in Chapin’s big win over Ben Lippen Aug. 31. The Eagles needed all 12 of those kills given the tightness of the competition, which went the distance with a full five sets. Their only match this week was Sept. 6 against A.C. Flora at home.
