For the first time this fall, the Chronicle is unveiling the male and female Athlete of the Week!

The first poll got great participation, racking up more than 500 votes over the weekend to help choose the players to be honored.
This week, the male nominees were Irmo running back Jaden Allen-Hendrix, River Bluff defensive end Alonzo Singleton and Gray Collegiate running back B.J. Montgomery.

The nominees for female athlete of the week were Lexington libero Sara Sykes, White Knoll libero Autumn Salomon, River Bluff setter Alexis Jodie and Chapin outside hitter Dani Meija.

Alonzo Singleton - River Bluff

River Bluff defensive end Alonzo Singleton and the Gators defense held Swansea to only one score during their 56-7 win.

In that game, Singleton recorded five tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss. Through two games this season, Singleton has 11 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss and a pair of sacks that he recorded in the season opening win over Lugoff-Elgin.

Singleton and the dominant defensive front of River Bluff will face their toughest match-up yet at Irmo Friday Sept. 1.

Autumn Salomon - White Knoll

Despite the season opening loss to Spring Valley, White Knoll libero Autumn Salomon put up solid numbers to help give her team a chance to pull out a win.
In that game, she was credited for an impressive 25 digs in the effort.

White Knoll head coach Rebecca Burriss nominated her for not only her impressive performance against Spring Valley, but for her dedication and success in the classroom and said she’s “a standout student here at the Knoll”.

It’s a big week for Saloman and the Timberwolves as they face Irmo on the road Aug. 29 and Westwood at home Aug. 31.
