A double-overtime loss without its starting quarterback dropped Clemson from the number 1 position in the Associated Press Top 25 College Football rankings.
The Tigers fell to 4th place following the 47-40 defeat to previously 4th ranked Notre Dame. The loss ended Clemson’s record 36-game winning streak against ACC opponents and its FBS record 50-game winning streak on Saturdays.
The victory was the 9th in school history over an AP number 1 by Notre Dame, which moved up to 2nd behind Alabama in the new poll released Sunday. The Fighting Irish received 2 of 63 1st place votes.
Clemson’s loss came despite freshman quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei throwing for 439 yards and 2 touchdowns in place of Trevor Lawrence. Wide receiver Cornell Powell had a career-high 161 yards on 6 receptions.
The Tigers’ offense was held to its lowest rushing total since 2009 with 34 yards. They also had 3 turnovers on fumbles, 1 of which was returned for a 23-yard touchdown in the 1st half by Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, and gave up 2 critical sacks on the final drive in the 2nd overtime. The defense allowed 518 total yards.
Clemson (7-1, 6-1) is idle this week and return to action Nov. 21 against Florida State.
