Dutch Fork girls rise in latest basketball coaches poll

Posted

This week’s South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association’s poll was released Tuesday and featured one team from Lexington County moving up.

The Dutch Fork girls rose from No. 6 to No. 4 in the 5A poll, while the county’s three other ranked teams maintained their placement from the previous week. Lexington’s boys sit atop the 5A poll, Gray Collegiate’s boys are No. 1 in 2A and the Gray girls are No. 4 in their 2A poll.

Dutch Fork is off to a 3-0 region start after double-digit wins over White Knoll, Chapin and River Bluff. The Silverfoxes go head-to-head Tuesday night against Lexington for first place in the region.

A win for Dutch Fork could lead to the team rising even more next week. For Lexington, pulling off the upset would mean the team is off to a 4-0 region start and could allow them to enter the poll next week.

Lexington and Gray’s boys teams hold their top spot another week. Both teams have kept the No. 1 spot in their class since the release of the preseason coaches poll.

The Wildcats are 18-2 and 3-0 in their region with games against Dutch Fork and Chapin this week. Gray sits at 18-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the region after their opponents forfeited the contests.

Gray’s girls kept their No. 4 spot after not competing this week. Technically the team did add two wins after forfeits from No. 6 Keenan.

Around the rest of the state, nine new teams entered the rankings.

Ashley Ridge and Goose Creek are No. 9 and 10 in the 5A girls poll, Greenville is No. 10 in the boys 4A poll and North Myrtle Beach and Riverside sit at No. 8 and 9 in the girls 4A poll.  At the lower classifications, Lower Richland entered the 3A boys poll at No. 10, Fairfield Central and Saluda came in ninth and 10th in the 2A girls rankings and High Point earned the No. 9 spot in the 1A boys poll.
