Gilbert, Airport win baseball tournaments

The final game did not go the way the Gilbert High School baseball team had hoped to close out the Sandlapper Shootout at home.

The Indians had won all three games entering a rematch against Rock Hill, a team it defeated 12-2 in the tournament opener. Prior to the contest, they had clinched the overall title after Hanahan dropped out and the Bearcats lost earlier in the day to Aiken.

Nevertheless, Gilbert still played the “final” which went in Rock Hill’s favor 6-0. The Bearcats capitalized off three Indian errors for three runs and held them to just two hits.

Gilbert will now open Region 5-3A play March 7 at Dreher.

A day earlier, the Airport baseball team improved to 4-0 on the season. It defeated North Augusta 7-4 to claim the Peach Ridge Invitational at Strom Thurmond High School.

Graham Whittle and Shane Hanna each drove in two runs and tournament MVP Corbin Wright and winning pitcher Josh Raines both had two hits and an RBI.

Raines, combined with Whittle and Brice Gillette to post six strikeouts in the win.
