The Opterra Solutions Invitational opened in “slamming” for co-host school Lexington and Brookland-Cayce.
Each team had go-ahead grand slam home runs in their respective victories. The Wildcats and Bearcats will face each other at 2:30 p.m. on March 3 at Lexington High School
The Wildcats defeated Dorman in the opening game 9-2 in a game which featured a first-inning grand slam by Patrick Evans and a two-run homer by Tyler Floyd.
Starting pitcher and University of South Carolina commit Reese Marcum struck out three in four innings. The Cavaliers’ lone runs came in the top of the first on a two-run homer by Mitch Hudson.
Will Burgess also drove in two runs for Lexington and Gamecock commit Brandon Cromer went 2-2 with an RBI.
The Bearcats scored all their runs in the top of the fifth inning after trailing 5-0 and withstood a late rally in the final inning for the victory.
Dylan McInchok started the comeback with an RBI single. With the bases loaded, Parker Mergo hit a two-run double to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Tanner Staton was intentionally walked with two outs to load the bases. Ty Marshall was sent to pinch hit for B.J. Etheridge and belted a 2-0 pitch over the rightfield wall to put the Bearcats ahead 7-5.
Robert McMillan followed with a solo home run to end the rally. He later got the final out on a dropped third strike after Catawba Ridge scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Beau Hollins hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning and struck out seven in 3 1/3 scoreless innings to lead the Gators.
Thomas Powell had two hits and he and Weston Grant both drove in runs for River Bluff. Andrew Vaughn finished the game by striking out six batters in 3 2/3 innings.

Gracie Scott had a 3-run homer, Maggie Linz also homered and Livi Warren went 2-3 as the Lady Wildcats opened the tournament with a win.
Aspen Mayers had three hits and Andee Dircks went 2-2 with 2 RBI to lead the Lady Eagles.
Leah Cabe struck out five and allowed four hits in five innings for the win.
