Lexington Amphitheater Announces Return of Rocketman, Independence Day Fireworks

Posted

The rockets will cast their red glare and then local musicians will pay tribute to the Rocketman.

In recent days, Lexington’s town-owned Icehouse Amphitheater announced the return of a popular Midlands concert experience and the details for its Independence Day Celebration.

Tokyo Joe’s enduringly popular Rocketman tribute to Elton John will be back at the venue on Sept. 16. The Columbia group, a fixture at local bars and street festivals, has been presenting its meticulously reproduced version of an Elton John concert for more than a decade, expanding from an annual performance at the Koger Center in Columbia to regularly taking it on the road — before it comes to Lexington this year, Rocketman will have touched down five times in Florida and Georgia in addition to performances in Newberry and Sumter.

“While going to great lengths to wear costumes that are exact replicas of those worn by Elton himself, and to entertain visually with state of the art lighting, Rocket Man is ultimately about the songs that are like a soundtrack to the lives of so many people,” the amphitheater notes in its event description.

The performance features Charlie Morgan, who spent 13 years drumming for Sir Elton.

Before celebrating the famed piano man, the amphitheater will mark Independence Day with an event on July 1.

The 246th Army Band is slated to perform from 7:30  to 9 p.m., with a fireworks show to follow. Patriotic music will be broadcast on 93.1 The Lake for anyone looking for a fireworks soundtrack.

“Best viewing areas [for fireworks] include the Icehouse Amphitheater, Main St. restaurants, Lexington Square Park, Lexington Veterans Monument and any public parking lot in the Downtown Area,” the event description notes.

Corresponding with the event, town parking lots along Church Street will be closed all day. Virginia Hylton Park will close at 7 p.m.
